The Truth About Anal Fissures

My name is Gregory RN and I am a Registered Nurse. I work as a Case Manager in a Medical Center in Southern California. The day after my forty first birthday, I was admitted in hospital with four pulmonary emboli, two bilaterally in my lower lobes and a week later I was admitted for one more in my right upper lobe. I was diagnosed with hyper coagulate condition which I will take coumadin for the rest of my life. Having this condition makes it very difficult for me to have surgical interventions. My protime is elevated, so this means I would have to stop my coumadin before a surgical intervention. Doing this puts me at risk for pulmonary emboli and other clotting disorders which is how I discovered this condition in the first place. This hyper coagulate state has change my perspective on seeking alternative and preventative ways of healing anal fissures. I needed to find some way of fixing this problem because surgery was not an option for me. My discovery’s are natural, common sense, cost effective, preventative, alternative and may eliminate surgery all together.

I have tried tradition methods that GI specialist recommend. I was prescribed Nitroglycerin ointment and Lidocaine Gel. Nitroglycerine ointment is used for heart patients when they have chest pain and is opens the coronary arteries to oxygen to the heart muscles during the chest pain so that the patient feels relief from the pain. I could never really understand why this would benefit my anal fissure. I do know that after the application of the medication, it stung and I felt pain for fifteen minutes. After the stinging stopped my physician said that I could use the lidocaine which is used for pain. When I applied this medication it stung immediately after the application and there was pain for ten minutes afterwards.

I sell essential oils with a friend and we started talking about the healing properties of oils. We discovered that Olive oil was good for pain, Vitamin E good for mucus membrane integrity, Basil and Lavender for assisting in amino acid building blocks and honey was good for basic wound healing. I went to my kitchen cupboard and poured extra virgin olive oil into a small cup. I applied the oil to the fissure and I cried a great sigh of relief. The consistency of the oil was so soothing. My pain stopped instantly. I mix up a potion of Olive oil, 2 drops Lavender oil, 2 drops Basil oil, 2 capsules and 400units vitamin E. I bought some Manuka honey (which I found out Medical Clinics use Manuka honey in New Zealand for wound care) and I cleaned my self after every bowel movement, I would have a sitz bath, apply honey for fifteen minutes then shower. I applied my oil mixture after my shower. I scheduled an application of the oil mixture twice a day. The anal fissure healed without surgery in four weeks!

This routine has changed for me through out the years by bathing everyday and washing very well and soaking the anal area for at least fifteen minutes. There are many soaps on the market that are made with healing intention. It is important to purchase soaps with essential oils for example; Lavender, Olive oil and Honey glycerin etc. Anal fissures have to be kept clean and I can not stress this enough! Soaps are very instrumental in this. Use two or three soaps during a bathing, it will help add the essential oils needed and prune and plump up the membranes to promote healing. After bathing, before bed apply Olive oil mixture gently with your index finger.
After each bowel movement, if there is bleeding use toilet paper very gently and sitz bath for five to tens minutes in the bath tub and wash with soap and water gently. Apply Olive oil, Lavender oil, Basil oil and Vitamin E mixture if you are having pain and bleeding. As fissures start closing and there is less bleeding. Attempt a couple days where there is no application of Olive oil to see if that area will start creating moisture on it’s own. If anal area dry and it is uncomfortable, start using the Olive oil mixture again.
Important sign! If there is itching, there is healing! Congratulations!

Funny thing! Fissures can came back!
Facts about fissures!
1. If you enjoy hot foods like I do, this will delay the fissure healing time. Consider thinking about laying off the hot and spicy foods. You may have a food allergy that is causing this anal fissure reaction.
2. Diet: soft, high fiber.
3. Poor bowel movement cleaning habits of the North American‘s. What does this mean? North Americans use toilet paper! This is the most unsanitary way of cleaning ones self after defecating. If one suffers from anal fissures, scraping this area with toilet paper will cause frication and irritation. Anal fissures may start bleeding and much pain. Many American’s suffer from toilet paper allergies and this may contribute to anal fissure due to poor mucus membrane integrity.
Alternative is to wash with soap and water if you have an open fissure.
Obtain a personal perineal wash bottle from an obstetrics ward of a hospital or medical supply store.
4. After a bowel movement, wipe gently. We maybe holding in anger. When visiting the Dental Hygienist, one may be told recessions are caused by brushing starting to on one side with aggression. Excessive forceful brushing will cause the gum line to recede. The hygienist may have to teach use all over again how to brush correctly. This same principle applies to our delicate anus. You maybe in a hurry to wipe and get out of the bathroom or maybe you had a bad day or a bad crap. But there is no reason to take it out on your butt hole. There is only so much pressure you can apply to your anus.
Warning: That aggression that you may take out on your ANUS for what ever reason will cause damage!
IT IS CALLED AN ANAL FISSURE
It will begin to tear down there and an open wound will form from this force…
AND IT IS A PAIN IN THE BUTTHOLE!
So be ginger and treat it like a flower and take care of it! After all, you will be using it every day!
5. Fissures do not like to be clean! The more you bath and soak…the faster they will heal. Use two or three kinds of soaps during a bathing. Start off with a honey glycerin soap, honey oatmeal and then use a Lavender and Olive oil essential oil soaps. Alternate yours soaps. A small tiny fissure may heal in three to five days. Large fissures may heal in three to four weeks without surgery!
6. Understand what’s is going on down there! If you feel some sharp burning pain then it is probably the beginning stages. During a bath with soap, inspect with your fingers and be ginger and gentle because fissures (which is a tear) can tear more if one is not careful. If you can not do this on your own then by all means, utilize someone else for the inspection.
7. Visit your doctor and let him know what you are doing. Tell him you are trying alternative healing. If it is working for you, tell him! Doctors need to know that alternative and preventative medicine can work!
